The River King

"It's the truth that haunts us"

Based on the best-selling novel by Alice Hoffman, The River King is the story of the investigation into the death of Gus Pierce (Thomas Gibson), a student at a posh private school. The river called King flows through Haddan, Massachusetts, a town that has a lot of secrets to hide. When Gus is found, seemingly drowned, in the frozen river, these secrets threaten to become public, causing the corruption both of the school and of the town's police department to become apparent. Leading the investigation is Abel Grey (Edward Burns). No sooner does he begin making inquiries into Gus' last hours than he finds himself variously puzzled and blocked. The dean of the school (Julian Rhind-Tutt) insists that Gus took his own life, as does the chief of police. But Abel refuses to close the book on the case. As more clinical evidence accumulates, Abel becomes convinced that Gus was murdered as part of a ghastly hazing ritual. The characters in this complex mystery are themselves compromised. Gus' girlfriend Carlin (Rachelle Lefevre), who assists Abel's investigation, is a girl whose connections with the crime and the possible perpetrators are not clear. Abel himself has plenty of psychic scars, caused by the suicide of his brother. And then there are ghostly signs apparently from Gus himself, seeking to direct the course of the investigation.
