The Spirit

"I'm gonna kill you all kinds of dead."

The Spirit is a superhero-based film released in 2008 that was both directed and written by Frank Miller. The movie is also based on a newspaper comic strip of the same name, which was written by Will Eisner. The movie features a man named Denny Colt, played by Gabriel Macht, who is only a rookie police officer who is killed on the job and returns to life as The Spirit. He is essentially a vigilante who is tasked with the job of hunting down evil forces in Central City, the main bad guy being The Octopus, who is played by Samuel L. Jackson. All the while, The Spirit himself finds himself resisting the urge to fall for a woman named Sand Saref, played by Eva Mendes, who specializes in seducing, marrying and then killing married men for the sake of using their wealth to fund her own highly privileged lifestyle. More interesting is that Saref was originally the Spirit's old crush from his childhood.

The Spirit is considered an American noir film, with a mix of action and crime drama in it as well.
