The Strangers

"Lock the door. Pretend you're safe."

The Strangers, a 2008 film directed by Bryan Bertino, is the story of a young couple who must fight for their lives when terrorized by three masked strangers. As the film opens James Hoyt, played by Scott Speedman, and Kristen McKay (Liv Tyler) arrive at a secluded house in the wee hours of the morning. They have been to a wedding reception, though it is clear that they are far from being in a festive mood. It seems that James had proposed to Kristen at the reception and been turned down. In the house, which is a vacation home of James’ parents, there are rose petals on the bed and champagne on ice, a sad reminder to both of the unhappy turn the day has taken.

While Kristen explains that she truly loves James but is just not ready for marriage, and James nurses his wounds, a loud knock sounds on the front door. The couple is clearly startled as there are few neighbors close by, and it is around 2 or 3 in the morning. Standing on the porch is a young woman who asks if a friend of hers is home. They explain that they have never heard of this person, and the woman goes on her way. This strange encounter spooks them, Kristen especially, but it is soon forgotten in the midst of their personal drama. When Kristen realizes she is almost out of cigarettes, James volunteers to make a run to the closest convenience store in order to escape the obvious tension between them.

James is only gone a few minutes before there is another loud bang on the door, and Kristen sees, in turn, three masked figures, one male and two female, through the windows. For reasons unknown to her, or the viewer, these strangers proceed to taunt and stalk her. Terrified, she calls James, and he turns around and returns to the house. What ensues is a frightening cat and mouse game whose stakes are life and death.
