The Trip To Spain, directed by Michael Winterbottom, is a comedy-drama film that follows the journey of two friends, Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon, who embark on a culinary tour of Spain. This is the third installment of the "The Trip" series, with the previous ones being "The Trip" and "The Trip To Italy." The film begins with Steve Coogan receiving an offer to write a food and travel column in a newspaper. He decides to take the opportunity and invites his friend Rob Brydon to join him on a trip to Spain, where they will sample some of the best delicacies that the country has to offer.

As they travel through various regions of Spain, the two friends indulge in a series of humorous banter and competitive mimicry, often impersonating famous celebrities like Roger Moore, Sean Connery, and Mick Jagger, among many others. These conversations are interspersed with beautiful shots of landscapes, architecture, and many iconic attractions around Spain.

Through their culinary journey, Coogan and Brydon explore the rich cultural history that Spain has to offer. They visit historic landmarks such as the Moorish Palace of Alhambra, Granada, and the Roman Amphitheatre in Merida, and as they do, their deepening friendship is revealed through their constant bickering.

The film continuously flips between the two spectrums of their relationship, from the hysterical bickering, arguing about their careers, and trading barbs about their life choices, to the poignant moments where they discuss the importance of friendship, their past, and future ambitions.

In between their travels, Steve tries to stay close to his family through phone calls, but it soon becomes evident that there is a lot of tension, drama, and heartbreak going on back home, which seems to be affecting him. We see him become more detached and somber compared to his more exuberant persona when he's with Brydon, and the contrast between the two selves shows the art and beauty of personal relationships.

As they continue on their journey, their impressions of each other and Spain change. While Coogan's wit, ego, and his bold gestures are tempered by some of the melancholy provided by his personal life, Brydon himself begins to reflect on his own life, his career, and how far he has come.

Throughout the story, Rebecca Johnson appears as a backdrop of comfort, offering support, congratulating them with a vein of gentle humour that undercuts the drama of their issues.

Director Winterbottom keeps the film engaging and exciting throughout. He combines the stunning visuals of Spain with the comedic and witty conversation between the two main characters, as well as the drama they face, creating a film that is entertaining, charming, and introspective.

Overall, The Trip To Spain is a film that manages to balance both humor and the reality which makes it much more captivating than the two previous versions of the film. It’s a perfect showcase of how comedy and drama can be used together to tell a truly moving story.

The Trip To Spain is a 2017 comedy with a runtime of 1 hour and 55 minutes. It has received mostly positive reviews from critics and viewers, who have given it an IMDb score of 6.6 and a MetaScore of 66.
