The Valachi Papers

Based on the biography of the same name, The Valachi Papers (1972) is a gritty crime drama starring Charles Bronson at the height of his career. Directed by Terrance Young and adapted for screen by Stephen Geller, the film follows the life of former Genovese mafia member Joseph Valachi. Imprisoned for smuggling heroine, Valachi is an aging mobster afraid he's been targeted by fellow inmate and family head Vito Genovese. When Valachi bludgeons a man to death in the prison courtyard only to find he's killed the wrong man, he turns to the FBI to avoid the death penalty and seek protection. Told in flashbacks, Valachi exposes La Cosa Nostra to the American public and becomes one of the first mafia informants in American history.

Bronson offers a strong, sympathetic lead in a world filled with action and violence, where murders are common place and silence is never to be broken.
