The Wedding Banquet

"You are cordially invited to a wedding where everybody wants to kiss the bride... except the groom."

The Wedding Banquet is a film about a Taiwanese gay man named Wei-Tung Gao who is living in New York with his partner Simon. One point of constant tension for Wei-Tung is his traditional-minded parents, who would like to see him married and have children. Unbeknownst to him, Mr. and Mrs. Gao hire a dating service so that their son can find a woman to marry. After Wei-Tung discovers what his parents have done, it is not too long before the truth comes out. On one particular date he meets an accomplished western opera singer who holds two PhDs and speaks five languages. Feeling totally uncomfortable and deciding to be honest with himself and her, Wei-Tung tells the truth about his relationship with Simon. Much to his surprise she also tells the truth about being in contact with a Caucasian man and intending to start a relationship with him. As a last-ditch effort to find a woman to marry, he remembers an artist from China named Wei-Wei who is in need of a Green Card. After hearing the news that Wei-Tung has found a bride, the Gaos fly to New York to have the traditional Chinese wedding banquet. Wei-Wei seduces Wei-Tung and becomes pregnant on the wedding night. When Simon discovers the fact that Wei-Tung got a woman pregnant, he gets very angry. After having a huge fight and feeling everything is falling apart, Wei-Tung tells the truth about his sexuality to his mother. Shocked to find out about her son's lifestyle, Mrs. Gao tells her son not to tell his father. Although his wife and son are not talking to him about the truth, Mr. Gao, being very perceptive, discovers that his son made a huge sacrifice to please him. He tells Simon that he knows about their relationship and accepts it by giving Simon the Hongbao. In Chinese tradition the Hongbao is a red envelope carrying well wishes from the parents.
