Watch Three Colors: Blue

The first of director Krzysztof Kie?lowski's "colors" trilogy, in which the auteur used cinema to express themes of liberty and equality forged in the French Revolution, "Three Colors: Blue" stars the brilliant Juliette Binoche as a woman whose husband and child are killed in a car accident from which she alone escapes. As she abandons any semblance of her old life by moving to Paris and isolating herself from her social circle, Binoche's character slowly begins to come to terms with what she has lost and how she has changed.

A meditation on how the loss of those dearest to us changes our mental state, the film achieves the level of high art. Most remarkably, the use of the color blue in the settings, objects, and wardrobe of the film creates an otherworldly quality for the viewer. Philosophically profound, strikingly beautiful, and deeply moving, the film is one of the highlights of cinema of the last 50 years and is a must-see for anyone seeking to understand the possibilities of cinema.
