Tirant lo Blanc

In 1401, Tirant lo Blanc (Zafer), a brave but melancholic knight famous for his exploits with a company of battle-hardened Almogavars, arrives at the port of Constantinople on assignment as the megas doux by the Byzantine emperor (Giancarlo Giannini). The prince was killed at battle against the Ottoman sultan (a fictional Mehmed IV) who demands to marry Princess Carmesina (Esther Nubiola), an ambitious and nave adolescent but the Emperor is too old to lead his armies. Tirant falls in love with Carmesina at first sight but even the young princess' entourage is divided along the lines of political factions. Carmesina's guardian Agnes, nicknamed the 'Placid Widow' (Victoria Abril) whose late husband was an ally of the antipope, favours the marriage with the Sultan, whereas Pleasure-of-My-Life (Leonor Watling), a lady-in-waiting sees in Tirant's arrival and his interest in Carmesina a new opportunity for recovery of the Empire against Turks. On the other hand, Estefania (Ingrid Rubio), another lady-in-waiting, supports Tirant's affair with Carmesina because she has fallen in love with Tirant's right-hand man Diafebus (Charlie Cox). Meanwhile, the Empress (Jane Asher) contemplates that Constantinople stands no chance against a Turkish onslaught and sees her daughter's marriage to the Sultan as the sole way to accommodate him.
