Triad Election is a Hong Kong crime thriller movie from 2006, directed and produced by Johnnie To. It is the sequel to the 2005 movie Election and follows the story of the Triad society in Hong Kong. The movie revolves around the two main characters, Lok (Simon Yam) and Big D (Tony Leung Ka-fai), who are competing for the position of chairman in the Wo Shing Society, the most prominent Triad organization in Hong Kong. Lok, the current chairman, is seeking reelection, while Big D, a powerful businessman, is challenging him for the position.

The plot gets interesting when the two leaders decide to avoid violence and choose a peaceful way of electing the chairman. They establish rules that only members who have been in the society for two consecutive terms and have some visual impairment (a symbolic way to approach patience and humility) can participate in the election.

However, things start to fall apart soon when Big D is accused of bribing his way through the election process. Lok has to deal with corruption within the organization while also managing his family and running his business. At the same time, Jimmy (Louis Koo), a small-time gangster, sees an opportunity to gain power and starts to play both the sides.

As the election date approaches, the atmosphere gets more intense and violent. Everyone has their own agenda and is willing to do whatever it takes to win the election. The movie reaches its climax with a tense standoff between Lok, Big D, and Jimmy.

The performances in Triad Election are top-notch. The cast includes some of the most exceptional actors in Hong Kong cinema, including Simon Yam, Nick Cheung, and Louis Koo. Simon Yam portrays the character of Lok, the current chairman, and gives a powerful performance. He shows the character’s vulnerability and desire to keep his position at any cost. Nick Cheung plays Jimmy, a small-time gangster, and gives a complex and compelling performance.

The direction and cinematography of the movie are also impressive. Director Johnnie To is known for his unique style of storytelling and camera work, and he does not disappoint with Triad Election. The use of colors, lighting, and camera angles adds an extra layer of intensity to the movie.

Triad Election is not just a story of power and politics within the Triad society, but it is also a rousing commentary on the state of politics in Hong Kong. The movie explores how power is gained and maintained within a hierarchical institution and how violence and corruption become a part of the game.

Overall, Triad Election is a gripping, intense, and well-crafted movie that will keep you hooked till the end. With outstanding performances, top-notch direction, and a powerful story, it is a must-watch for fans of Hong Kong cinema and crime thrillers.

Triad Election is a 2006 drama with a runtime of 1 hour and 32 minutes. It has received mostly positive reviews from critics and viewers, who have given it an IMDb score of 7.4 and a MetaScore of 83.
