Vicky Cristina Barcelona

"Life is the ultimate work of art"

The movie Vicky Cristina Barcelona is the story of two young American women who go on vacation in Spain, and have their trip take any number of twists and turns, as only director Woody Allen could tell. Vicky, played by Rebecca Hall, is a serious straight shooter that never takes a step off her set path. She has a fiance at home that has not accompanied the two women to Spain. Cristina, played by Scarlett Johansson, is spontaneous and adventurous, and definitely not afraid to try new things. Vicky is in Spain to do research, while Cristina is looking to have fun.

While in Barcelona, Vicky and Cristina meet a handsome Spaniard named Juan Antonio, played by Javier Bardem. Juan Antonio takes a keen liking to the young American women right away and invites them to take a trip with him away for the weekend to the city of Oviedo. Vicky is reluctant, but Cristina enthusiastically convinces her to go along. Cristina has immediate fondness and affection for Juan Antonio, and it appears that Cristina and Juan Antonio will end up going to bed together. However, an unexpected illness stops Cristina in her tracks, and Vicky ends up being wooed by Juan Antonio, succumbing to his charms, and sleeping with him.

When they return to Barcelona, Vicky feeling guilty begins to bury herself in her research while Cristina and Juan Antonio reconnect to the point where they move in together. Things become further complicated when Vicky's fiance Doug, played by Chris Messina, shows up, while Vicky is having trouble denying her feelings for Juan Antonio. Also, while Cristina is living with Juan Antonio, his ex wife Maria Elena, played by Penelope Cruz, who he has a turbulent past with shows up as well.

As we've come to expect from Woody Allen movies, all chaos breaks out in a most hilarious and entertaining way as such a large assortment of people attempt to work out their feelings for one another. Ultimately, Vicky Cristina Barcelona is charming, funny, and poignant, and a movie most audiences will enjoy.
