The Mariner sails the vast body of water in his trimaran. He visits floating village to trade dirt, which is one of the valuable commodities during the time. However, as he walks the village, people find his webbed feet and gills a mutational phase and the next step towards evolution. The body adapts to the climate conditions hence producing the gills and webbed feet. Fearful of such change, the villagers cease him and take him into custody until the elders can vote on what to do with him. They later decide to recycle him by immersing him into a yellow mud pool.

The Mariner's execution is halted when sea pirates, known as Smokers, raid the village after tipped of by one of their spies who was disguised as a barterer. The Smokers invade the village looking for a girl named Enola, who is believed to have the map that leads to dry land, which is imprinted on her skin as a tattoo. Enola along with her guardian, Helen, attempts to escape with Gregor, an old inventor, in a hot air balloon. Unfortunately, Gregor took off too early, leaving Enola and Helen stranded on the atoll. They later get the idea of freeing The Mariner who is currently caged and submerged halfway from the mud pit.

The Mariner agrees to escape with Helen and Enola if they free him from the cage. Together, they embark on a journey to find dry land while escaping the pursuing Smokers.
