Jeff Bridges portrays the character of Dr. Christopher B. Sheldon. He is taking the students on a school sailing adventure on a ship called the Albatross. Dr. Sheldon wants the teens to learn about hard work and working together on a team. The boys lack discipline and have issues with their behavior at home and school so he wants them to grow and attain experience so that they can develop into well-adjusted men.

The boys warm up to Dr. Sheldon and refer to him as Skipper. Dr. Sheldon’s wife Alice also goes on the eight month long voyage to assist him. As time goes on the boys look to Dr. Sheldon as a second father because he listens to them and helps them deal with good and bad times. Most of the boys have issues with their families and see Dr. Sheldon as someone to look up to and ask for advice from.

The ship ends up sinking due to a white squall that occurs during a bad storm. The students try very hard to survive and Dr. Sheldon is their pillar of strength and direction. Sadly, many of the boys end up drowning in the storm. Chuck Gieg survives and lives to tell the tale of what happened to the Albatross. The story is one about how to grow up and deal with tragedy and be able to work on picking up the pieces after a traumatic incident occurs.
