Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? is the film adaptation of Edward Albee's stage play of the same name. The plot centers around the volatile marriage relationship between George, a New England college professor, and his alcoholic wife, Martha, born into privilege as the daughter of the college's president. Upon returning from visiting her father late on a Sunday evening, Martha suddenly informs George that she has invited Honey and Nick, a new college instructor, to stop by their house for cocktails. This sets the scene for arguments and tirades between the hen-pecked George and the vengeful Martha, making Honey and Nick feel quite uncomfortable the minute they walk through the door.

As George and Martha's verbal jousting becomes more vicious, Nick asks about their 16-year old son. Their hosts manage to sidestep his questions. When the young couple asks for a ride home, the group retreats to a nearby roadhouse, only to have Martha become more furious and return home.
