"It's Scrumdidilyumptious!"

Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory as it was made in 1971 is the silver screen adaptation of the story Charlie and the Chocolate Factory written by Roald Dahl. Willy Wonka is an innovative creator of all kinds of candy and an owner of a Chocolate Factory which holds many wonders. Wonka offers a tour of his candy factory to five people who are lucky enough to discover five gold tickets hidden inside of the foil wrappers around chocolate candy bars.

Many people are eager to find the golden tickets. Seekers of the tickets consist of adults and children of all ages and types. The story focuses on one child in particular called Charlie Bucket. Charlie is the central character. Charlie lives with his parents and grandparents in a small dwelling. He spends most of his time helping his mother or visiting with Grandpa Joe. The story emphasizes Charlie's good qualities learned while growing up in poverty and dealing with adversity. Charlie is the recipient of a golden ticket.

In comparison to Charlie are four other children who win golden tickets through various means. The four others are not as kind or polite as Charlie. The four children are Mike Teavee, Veruca Salt, Violet Beauregarde and Augustus Gloop. All of them visit the chocolate factory with Charlie.

Willy Wonka personally hosts the winners of the golden ticket throughout his factory all the while revealing marvelous inventions of candy mixed with applications of science and fantasy. Fabulous factory wonders include a chocolate waterfall, a candy boat, teleportation, a gum that provides a full meal, and control of gravity through fizzy drinks with burping.

Wonka's helpers are the Oompa Loompas who work for beans and provide moral direction through songs. The songs highlight character faults and consequences of one's actions as the children travel through the factory. The story showcases the characters' morality through their actions and their rewards. For Charlie, the end brings a wonderful surprise.
