Much of the humor comes from the relationship between Yellowbeard and his son, Dan. Dan grew up a normal child raised to be a good person and an intellectual. Yellowbeard could not be more disappointed by that. Yellowbeard believes that toughness, backstabbing, and amorality are the proper traits for a pirate's son to have. He wants him to kill the man who raised him, but Dan refuses saying he was kind and caring. Despite the conflict, Dan still wants to help his father so he joins Yellowbeard in the quest to find the treasure.
With his son's tattooed head in tow, Yellowbeard proceeds to gather a motley crew of misfits and sets out on a sea voyage to the island where he buried his treasure.
The way to the island is fraught with danger. A British commodore is hot on his trail, a former shipmate turns traitor, and he runs afoul of Spanish conquistadors when he makes it to the island. A battle commences soon after.
The map itself is not easy to follow as Yellowbeard drew it in an injured condition twenty years back so the key to finding the spot was to stagger and crawl not take normal paces. Yellowbeard remembers this during the heat of battle.
The film is filled with sword fights, sailing ships, cannon fire, and more in the raucous comedy about pirates.
