"Rebel Soldier Hustler Prisoner Fugitive Firebrand"

Young Winston is a British, live action, dramatic film released in the early 1970s. It's based on an autobiography by Winston Churchill that focuses on the British Prime Minister's early years. The young adult Churchill is portrayed by English film and stage actor Simon Ward. Young Winston is broken into two parts. The first section of the film focuses on Winston's depressing childhood at home with Lady and Lord Randolph Churchill (Anne Bancroft and Robert Shaw). After his father's death, the movie switches to an older Winston and his cavalry service with British Expeditionary Forces in India and Sudan. Young Winston then moves on to his time as a war correspondent during the Second Boer War of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The film ends at Churchill's election to the British Parliament and his rise to Tory Party leader. Here, he begins his tenure of questioning government's role when he goes against the Liberal Party leader and the current Prime Minister.

Besides Bancroft and Shaw, Young Winston featured an all-star cast both in front and behind the camera. The movie was written and produced by American screenwriter Carl Foreman and directed by the acclaimed British Director Richard Attenborough. Other cast members of Young Winston included Ian Holm, Anthony Hopkins, Patrick McGee, Edward Woodward, and Robert Hardy.

At 157 minutes and released by Columbia Pictures, Young Winston premiered in July of 1972 with a rating of PG.
