Joe's huge corporation, Fox Books, opens a store right around the corner from Kathleen's small business, The Shop Around the Corner. He desperately wants to put her out of business, and she fights fiercely to keep her doors open. They meet several times in person, unaware that they share an online relationship. In their online relationship, he gives Kathleen advice on how to keep her shop open.
Eventually, Joe realizes that Shopgirl might be the love of his life, so he sets up a meeting in person. However, before the blind date, he finds out that Kathleen is the woman he is meeting. After the discovery, he must battle with his romantic feelings towards her as she grows more and more bitter over his success. After he breaks up with his girlfriend and discovers she has broken up with her significant other, he attempts to create a friendship between them, all the while keeping his alter-ego a secret.
The film is based on a play that was previously turned into a movie in 1940 titled The Shop Around the Corner. The characters use AOL as their internet provider, which gives the movie its title due to the fact that "You've Got Mail" is AOL's trademark greeting.
You've Got Mail is currently available to watch and stream, download, buy on demand at Amazon Prime, Vudu, Google Play, FandangoNow, iTunes, YouTube VOD online.
