8 Out of 10 Cats

Taking it's name from a commercial tag line is 8 out of 10 Cats, a popular comedic polling panel show from BBC 4, starring comedian Jimmy Carr as its host. With a team of witty captains, Sean Lock, Dave Spikey, Jason Manford, and Jon Richardson and a slew of celebrities from the rich and famous to the newly popular, 8 out of 10 cats is a look into the strange world of public polling and its surprising insights into popular culture. The show has run for 15 series on the BBC, occasionally changing team captains.

Questions are designed to befuddle and baffle the team captains and their guests, spurring a round of comedic conversation. In each episode, the two teams compete against each other, though no prizes are awarded for winning. The show centers around providing interesting facts in a comedic fashion.

The panel game centers around three rounds during which any one of five games are commonly played:

In "What Are You Talking About?" Panelists must have a savvy knowledge of current events, for they have to discern what the most popular topics of conversation were in the week. "Pick of the Polls" requires teams to pick a picture which relates to a specific poll. "Believe it or Not" tests their bluffing skills to discern if seemingly unbelievable statistics are in fact truly unbelievable. They win points for discerning the real statistics for the fake one. "And the Winner Is..." gives teams a polling question for which they must guess the top answers. Finally, "The Pole With a Whole" requires teams to fill in the blank of a strange statistic. Poll topics range from the scientific, to specific groups, general knowledge, and overall popular culture.
