Antiques Roadshow Season 12 Episode 3 Baltimore - Hour 3
- January 21, 2008
In this episode of Antiques Roadshow, the show visits Charm City, otherwise known as Baltimore. Appraisers begin the hour at the American Visionary Art Museum, where they meet a Baltimore artist whose collection showcases how he's been influenced by his lifelong battle with Tourette Syndrome.
At the Baltimore Convention Center, appraisers take a look at a collection of carnival chalkware figures that were collected by the guest's great-grandmother and used as prizes on the boardwalk in Atlantic City. The appraisers are impressed with their near-perfect condition, but how will they value such an unconventional collection?
Next, a Mondrian inspired vase made by the guest's father who studied under the celebrated ceramics professor Marguerite Wildenhain caught the appraisers' eye. They'll examine the intricate glazing and subtle shades of color in the pottery to determine what it's worth.
A man who spent much of his career working in the fields of applied physics and underwater acoustics brings a collection of unusual clocks that have been in his family for a century. These valuable works of art were made by his great-uncle who was a pioneer in the field of horology. But will the guest be willing to part with them?
At the Baltimore Convention Center, appraisers take a closer look at a simple-looking but valuable piece of jewelry which was given to the guest's mother during the civil rights era. It's a bracelet featuring a tiki-like figure that has been attributed to the famous jewelry designer Arthur Jensen. Will it live up to its expectations?
The show closes with a visit to the nearby Baltimore Museum of Art where the curator introduces appraisers to the largest public collection of works by Elizabeth Catlett. They admire the miniature figurines, a bronze sculpture that graced the cover of an important African-American newspaper, and a carved stone statue made by the artist as an expression of political outrage.
Overall, it's a diverse and interesting collection of items that are sure to delight viewers and appraisers alike in this episode of Antiques Roadshow.
