In episode 5 of season 1 of the Best of Bourdain, Anthony Bourdain journeys to the Southeast Asian country of Laos to explore its unique culture, history, and cuisine. Laos, a landlocked country between Thailand and Vietnam, had been affected heavily by the Vietnam War and was only recently opened to foreign travelers.

Bourdain starts his journey in the capital city of Vientiane, where he immerses himself in the daily routines of the locals. He visits the morning market to see the fresh produce, meat, and fish on display and speaks with vendors who still use traditional methods to make noodles and other foods. Bourdain also visits a monastery to learn about the importance of Buddhism in Laotian culture.

Next, Bourdain heads to a rural village to witness the traditional rice planting ceremony, which marks the beginning of the rice planting season. He joins in the festivities, including a giant feast and a water buffalo race. Bourdain reveals the significance of rice in Laotian culture and how it is a staple food for the majority of the population.

Bourdain then visits the Plain of Jars, an archaeological site where thousands of giant stone jars are scattered throughout the landscape. This mysterious site, dated between 500 BC and 200 AD, has puzzled historians for years. Bourdain explores the area with a local guide and learns about its possible origins and uses.

Finally, Bourdain concludes his journey with a focus on Laotian cuisine, particularly its sticky rice and spicy dips. He visits a local family to learn how to make tam mak hoong, a spicy papaya salad, and jeow bong, a fiery dip made from chili and buffalo skin. Bourdain also tries the famous riverweed, a Laotian delicacy that is harvested from the Mekong River and is similar to sushi.

Throughout the episode, Bourdain highlights the resilience and kindness of the Laotian people, who have endured centuries of conflict and hardship yet continue to welcome strangers with open arms. The episode offers a unique insight into a country that is often overlooked by tourists but is rich in history, culture, and cuisine.
