As a celebrity chef, Matty Matheson has achieved everything that could possibly be envisioned. He has his food show, a cookbook, and the support of millions of viewers around the world. However, despite his success, Matty still yearns for more. Fed up with trying to live the good life in the fast-paced city, he reevaluates his priorities, sells his house, and relocates his family to his hometown of Fort Erie, Ontario.
In this debut episode of Dead Set on Life, titled "The Life of Matty," viewers get a glimpse into behind-the-scenes life of the chef as he dives headfirst into his new life in Ontario, trying to reconnect with his roots. Matty invites the audience to join him on a journey that involves indulgence, discovery, and self-discovery. In each episode of this culinary travel series, Matheson visits new and fascinating places around Canada, searching for the best food in town and uncovering hidden culinary gems.
The pilot episode opens with Matty in a cab, fresh off the plane and heading towards his new home. On the way, he comes across a curbside truck that is selling some of the best-looking jerk chicken he's ever seen. Before he can even get out of the cab, he asks the driver to pull over so that he can sample some of the jerk chicken. This scene beautifully sets the tone of the show with the explanation that jerk chicken is something that's a lot like the new life Matty is starting in Ontario. It's spicy, it's delicious, it's soul-nourishing, and, most importantly, it represents a link to his past and where he comes from.
Once Matty arrives at his childhood home in Ontario, viewers are greeted with a warm welcome from his parents, who've left him the key to the family house that he grew up in. The house has been sitting empty for a while, so Matty brings in his cleaning crew to spruce it up before his family moves in. Once he's done cleaning up the house, we're treated to a montage of Matty walking around his hometown, becoming reacquainted with old haunts and the people he grew up. We learn about his history as he visits the Fort Erie’s famous Peace Bridge.
Throughout the episode, we see Matty's character shining through. He is brash and unapologetic, but it's clear that he cares about his family, his friends, and his community. He drops by various local spots and meets with several inhabitants, including farmers, brewers, restaurant owners, and other locals, using their stories to paint a vivid picture of his hometown's culinary scene.
We get to see that Matty is just like any other guy who is trying to find happiness and joy in life. He spends quality time with his wife and young children, taking them out to enjoy the local environment, go camping, and exploring the countryside. In one of the most memorable sequences, he builds a campfire by the river and cooks up some sausages over it, using his knowledge as a famous chef to whip something up that is both simple and delicious.
Ultimately, the episode culminates with Matty preparing a celebratory dinner for his friends and family, bringing together people from all over his hometown to dig into his incredible food. The episode ends on this happy moment, with viewers feeling both satisfied and intrigued about what other adventures and great meals are in store for Matty on his new journey.
In conclusion, this first episode of Dead Set on Life effectively showcases Matheson's expertise, personality, and his deep love for food. It's a refreshing and engaging show that not only entertains but also gives the viewers an insight into Canadian culinary cultures. It's an enjoyable watch for anyone who loves food, travel, and culture.
