Earth's Sacred Wonders is a nature documentary series that explores the sacred places of the world and the people and cultures that hold them dear. In season 1 episode 3, titled "Visions of the Divine," viewers delve deeper into the incredible religious locations that grace our planet.

At the beginning of the episode, viewers are taken to one of Turkey's most famous landmarks, the Hagia Sophia. Originally a Christian church, the Hagia Sophia was transformed into a mosque in the 15th century and became a museum in 1934. However, in 2020, it converted back into a mosque despite the controversies that this decision sparked. This episode shows us a rare glimpse of the inside of the Hagia Sophia, highlighting its stunning architecture and the histories behind it.

In India, the episode takes us to the holy city of Varanasi on the banks of the River Ganges. This location is considered one of the holiest cities in Hinduism and plays an important role in Buddhist and Jainist religions as well. The city is known for its ancient customs and rituals, including the daily offerings of flowers, water, and fire. The episode follows locals as they share their beliefs and practices and explains why Varanasi is so revered.

The next stop is the Taizé Community in France which started as a temporary accommodation for WW2 refugees. Today, it serves as a pilgrimage site and a place of worship for young Christians from all over the world. The episode explores how the Taizé community welcomes all who seek spiritual comfort and so, across its borders and beyond it, has become a theatre for peace and reconciliation. The Taizé Community is founded upon ecumenical ideals that have fostered a sense of community and solidarity, making it a unique and beloved destination for Christians looking to deepen their faith.

Finally, the episode travels to Turkey's Mount Nemrut to discover the 2,000-year-old sculpture of King Antiochos - a ruler who claimed divine status. For centuries, visitors have been drawn to the mountain to see the colossal sculptures of gods and animals, but to truly understand its significance one has to witness the sunrise. The episode explores how the sunrise on Mount Nemrut is imbued with religious symbolism and draws both locals and tourists alike.

"Visions of the Divine" takes viewers on an incredible journey to religious sites around the world and helps them gain a greater understanding of the deep significance of these places. It encourages the audience to reflect on the values that underpin societies and shows how these places can bring people together regardless of their differences. Through gorgeous visuals, interviews with locals, and expert insights, this episode makes for a truly inspiring watch.
