Europe's New Wild season 1 episode 2, "Return of the Titans," takes viewers on a journey through the rugged landscape of Romania's Carpathian Mountains to witness the spectacular return of some of Europe's most impressive creatures.

The episode begins with stunning shots of the mountainous terrain, and we are introduced to the main focus of the show: the rewilding of Europe's wilderness. The concept of rewilding, which involves restoring ecosystems by reintroducing lost species to their natural habitats, is a relatively new idea in Europe, but it has already achieved impressive results.

We meet Frank, a German ecologist who has spent years trying to bring back the sturgeon, a prehistoric fish that was once abundant in the Danube River but has now disappeared due to overfishing and habitat destruction. Frank is determined to reintroduce the sturgeon to the river, but it's not an easy task. He takes us on a journey to a hatchery, where they breed sturgeon in captivity, and then follows the process of releasing them back into the river.

Next, we meet wildlife biologist Cristina, who is tracking the movements of the largest land mammal in Europe, the European bison. The bison was hunted to extinction in the wild in the early 20th century, but thanks to successful reintroduction efforts, it has made a comeback in the Carpathian Mountains. Cristina shows us her work monitoring the bison, and we get to see these magnificent creatures up close.

We also get a glimpse of the complex relationship between humans and wildlife in the region. We meet a shepherd who has to protect his flock of sheep from predators like wolves and bears, which are also making a comeback in the area. We see how his dogs help him keep the predators at bay, and how he has to navigate the delicate balance between protecting his sheep and respecting the natural habitat of the predators.

Towards the end of the episode, we witness the return of another titan: the lynx. The lynx was once widespread throughout Europe but was hunted to near-extinction for its fur. However, it has slowly been making a comeback thanks to conservation efforts. We see footage of these elusive creatures in the wild, and learn about their importance in maintaining a balanced ecosystem.

Overall, "Return of the Titans" is a beautiful and informative episode that showcases the wonders of Europe's rewilding efforts. From prehistoric sturgeon to the magnificent bison and elusive lynx, we see the remarkable resilience of Europe's wildlife and the inspiring work being done to reintroduce lost species back into their natural habitats.
