Ep 6. Ally

In the sixth and final episode of the first season of Losers, titled "Ally," the audience is taken on a journey with former Canadian hockey standout, Angela James. James is considered by many to be the first woman to break through the barriers of male-dominated ice hockey and pave the way for future generations of female players.

However, the episode paints a different picture of James' career. Director Mickey Duzyj dives deep into the struggles that James faced during her playing days, both on and off the ice. Through interviews with James, former teammates, and coaches, the audience learns about the discrimination and racism that James faced throughout her career.

As a Black woman playing in a predominantly white sport, James' talent was often overlooked and her accomplishments were discounted. Even after she became the first woman to be inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame, James was still not fully embraced by the hockey community. She recounts how people would often ask her why she deserved to be in the Hall of Fame when there were so many male players who had not been inducted yet.

But despite the hurdles that James faced, she remained committed to the game that she loved. Even when the Canadian Women's Hockey League was in danger of folding, James stepped up as the league's commissioner in order to ensure that future generations of young girls would have the opportunity to play the sport. The episode culminates with James being recognized for her contributions to women's hockey, as she is inducted into the Order of Hockey in Canada.

Through James' story, "Ally" sheds light on the many obstacles that women, particularly women of color, face in male-dominated industries. The episode is both inspiring and heartbreaking, as James' story highlights the progress that has been made, as well as the work that still needs to be done.
