Ep 4. Blunderbuss

In this episode of Master of Arms, titled "Blunderbuss," the three contestants are tasked with recreating one of the most iconic weapons in history – the Blunderbuss. A precursor to the modern shotgun, the Blunderbuss was a favored weapon of pirates and highwaymen alike, known for its wide spray of shot and intimidating appearance. The challenge does not just end at replicating the Blunderbuss, as the contestants must also demonstrate their knowledge of the history behind it, as well as their proficiency with the weapon.

The contestants are introduced to the Blunderbuss by host and veteran bladesmith, Ashley Hlebinsky. Ashley explains the history and use of the Blunderbuss and demonstrates how it differs from other firearms of its time. The contestants are given a unique opportunity to examine up close a real antique Blunderbuss, which serves both as inspiration and as a reference for their own creations.

Under the watchful eye of judges J. Neilson, Ben Abbott, and David Baker – all highly skilled bladesmiths in their own rights – the contestants then set out to build their own Blunderbusses. The process involves multiple steps, including forging the barrel, creating the stock, and assembling all the necessary components. As the contestants work, they face challenges such as warped wood, irregular metal, and misaligned sights.

Aside from their craftsmanship, the contestants' historical knowledge and shooting ability are also tested. In one challenge, they are asked to identify different types of ammunition used in the Blunderbuss, from simple buckshot to more exotic options like grape and haggle. In another challenge, they must demonstrate their accuracy and power with the weapon by hitting a clay target from a distance of 50 yards.

As the episode reaches its climax, the contestants present their finished Blunderbusses for evaluation. The judges closely inspect each weapon for both functionality and historical accuracy. They also conduct a firing test to evaluate the contestants' shooting ability. In a tense moment, one contestant's Blunderbuss doesn't fire as intended, which leads to a last-minute repair attempt and may have serious repercussions for their chances of winning.

In the end, one contestant is crowned the "Master of Arms" for this episode, earning a $10,000 prize and the admiration of their peers. The contestants' hard work, attention to detail, and respect for the Blunderbuss are on full display throughout the episode, making for a thrilling, educational, and highly entertaining watch.
