In Medal of Honor season 1 episode 4, titled "Hiroshi 'Hershey' Miyamura," the show pays tribute to the incredible bravery of one of America's most decorated soldiers. Hershey Miyamura was a Japanese-American soldier who fought in World War II and the Korean War. In this episode, we hear Hershey's story in his own words and from the perspectives of those who served with him.

We learn that Hershey was one of the 442nd Regimental Combat Team, a unit composed entirely of Japanese-American soldiers. The 442nd fought in Europe during World War II, and they were considered one of the most highly decorated units in U.S. military history. Hershey was awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions during the Korean War, but in this episode, we hear about a previous encounter that foreshadowed his incredible heroism.

During World War II, Hershey and his unit were tasked with rescuing a lost battalion of American soldiers. The battalion had become surrounded by German forces and was in danger of being overrun. Hershey and his comrades fought their way through enemy lines to reach the lost battalion, and Hershey's actions during this mission would earn him the nickname "Hershey Bar" from his fellow soldiers.

The true heroism, however, came during the Korean War. Hershey was a machine gunner with the 7th Infantry Division when his unit was attacked by a massive Chinese force. The Chinese soldiers quickly overran the American position, and Hershey found himself cut off from his unit with a wounded comrade. Despite being vastly outnumbered, Hershey single-handedly held off the Chinese forces, buying time for his wounded comrade to escape. He continued to fight until he ran out of ammunition and was captured by the enemy.

What happened next is nothing short of incredible. Hershey used his captivity to his advantage, gathering intelligence on the enemy and passing it along to his fellow prisoners. He also became a leader among his fellow captives, inspiring them through his courage and resilience. And when the opportunity for escape presented itself, Hershey took it, leading a group of prisoners on a treacherous journey through enemy territory to safety.

Throughout this episode, we hear from Hershey himself, as well as from those who served with him and knew him well. We hear about his determination and courage in the face of overwhelming odds, and we come to understand just what an incredible hero Hershey Miyamura truly is. His story is a testament to the resilience and bravery of all the men and women who serve in the United States military, and it is an inspiration to us all.
