Miss America is a yearly televised scholarship pageant that features young women between tha ages of 17-24 competing for the coveted title. A young woman representing each state as well as the District of Columbia, and the U.S. Territories make up the 53 competitors. The show is televised live from Las Vegas, Nevada and hosted by Brooke Burke and Chris Harrison.

The Miss America Pageant telecast begins with the traditional parade of states, where the young women individually introduce themselves while wearing a costume related to their respective state. Moments later, the first round of cuts take place, and the field is reduced to 10-12 semi-finalists. The highest combined interview, swimsuit, and evening gown scores from the prior week's preliminary competition determines who makes it to the semi-finals.

After the semi-finalists are named, the competition starts all over again. The young women compete in swimsuit, evening gown, and the talent portion, which comprises over half of the final score. The talent portion is the most anticipated round because it gives competitors the opportunity showcase their talents in such areas as singing, piano playing, dancing and baton twirling. The group is then whittled down to five young women, one of which will win the title of Miss America.

The last five contestants standing must now answer a randomly chosen question, asked by one of the judges or by a Facebook subscriber. The questions can cover a wide range of issues from politics to social issues. This is the most crucial part of the pageant because contestants are given the opportunity to shine and show grace, intelligence, and the ability to think quickly under pressure. The pageant can easily be lost or won at this point depending on how well the contestant answers--and often, it is.

As the final scores are tallied, the reigning Miss America gives a final farewell walk. The moment of truth arrives. One by one, the fourth runner-up, third runner-up, and second runner-up is announced. The first runner-up and winner wait in nervous anticipation as their placing is announced. Once the winner is crowned by the reigning Miss America, she takes her runway walk among screaming admirers and camera flashes.
