Historian David Starkey leads the examination of the British monarchy in particular, which has held unbroken rule since the Middle Ages. The series aired on the UK's Channel 4 between 2004 and 2006.

  • The effects of the French Revolution and the madness of George III on the British monarchy are chronicled in this episode. It ends with a discussion of the long reign of Queen Victoria.

  • The House of Hanover takes over the throne of Great Britain after the death of Queen Anne in 1714. The reigns of George I, George II, and George III are examined in this episode. Events include the Jacobite Rebellions of 1715 and 1795 and the loss of Britain's American colonies under George III.

  • Queen Anne ascends to the throne upon the deaths of her predecessors, William and Mary, and leads Britain to a series of military victories abroad. But the Queen dies childless thus bringing an end to the House of Stuart.

  • The Glorious Revolution of 1688 was a bloodless coup that drove the unpopular Catholic King James II from the throne and installed the dual monarchy of King William III and Queen Mary II. It also lead to a reduction in royal powers and an increase in those of parliament.

  • The English monarchy is restored in 1660 and Charles II, son of the executed Charles I, takes the throne. Charles is a crafty and libidinous fellow who manages to survive numerous challenges to his rule and also find time to father 17 illegitmate children.
