Monday Night Football Season 40 Episode 11 Baltimore Ravens at Cleveland Browns
- November 16, 2009
It's week 14 of the NFL season and Monday Night Football is featuring a matchup between two AFC North rivals, the Baltimore Ravens and the Cleveland Browns. This is a critical game for both teams as they battle for a playoff spot in a highly competitive division.
The Ravens come into the game with a record of 8-5 and currently sit in the seventh and final playoff spot in the AFC. They are riding a two-game winning streak and are led by their dynamic quarterback Lamar Jackson. Jackson has had an up and down season, but when he's on, he's nearly impossible to stop. The Ravens also boast one of the best defenses in the league, led by veteran linebacker Terrell Suggs.
The Browns, on the other hand, have had a disappointing season. They sit at 4-8-1 and have been plagued by inconsistency and turnover issues. However, they have a talented roster led by second-year quarterback Baker Mayfield and star receiver Jarvis Landry. The Browns have also recently fired their head coach Hue Jackson and offensive coordinator Todd Haley, so this game will be their first under interim head coach Gregg Williams.
The matchup between these two teams is always intense, as they have a long history of bitter divisional battles. But this game is especially important for both teams given their playoff hopes. The Ravens need a win to stay in the playoff hunt, while the Browns are looking for a statement win to salvage their season.
The game kicks off at 8:15 pm ET at FirstEnergy Stadium in Cleveland. MNF's veteran booth team of play-by-play announcer Joe Tessitore and color commentator Jason Witten will call the action, joined by sideline reporter Booger McFarland.
As the game begins, both defenses come out firing. The Ravens are able to force a Browns punt on their first possession, but the Browns defense answers with a quick three-and-out of their own. On the Browns' next possession, Mayfield shows off his arm with a deep completion to Landry, but the drive stalls and they're forced to punt again.
The Ravens get on the scoreboard first with a long touchdown run by running back Gus Edwards. The Browns answer back with a field goal, but the Ravens offense strikes again with another touchdown run by Edwards.
As the second quarter begins, the Browns are down 14-3 and desperately need a spark. Mayfield finds Landry for a big gain, setting up a touchdown pass to tight end David Njoku. The Ravens answer back with a field goal, but the Browns come right back with another touchdown pass from Mayfield, this time to receiver Antonio Callaway. The score is now 17-16 in favor of the Ravens.
The rest of the second quarter is a defensive battle, with neither team able to put up any more points. The Ravens continue to lead by one point heading into halftime.
In the third quarter, the Ravens offense starts to find its rhythm. Jackson leads a long touchdown drive, capped off by a touchdown pass to rookie tight end Mark Andrews. The Browns offense struggles to get going and the Ravens extend their lead to 10 points with another field goal.
The Browns defense comes up with a big play, intercepting a pass from Jackson deep in their own territory. Mayfield then leads a touchdown drive, finding Njoku for his second touchdown of the game. The score is now 27-23 in favor of the Ravens.
As the game heads into the fourth quarter, it's anyone's game. The Ravens are able to add another field goal, but the Browns answer back with a touchdown pass from Mayfield to Landry. The Ravens lead by three points with just over two minutes remaining.
The Browns defense is able to force a quick three-and-out, giving Mayfield and the offense a chance to lead a game-winning drive. They move the ball into Ravens territory, but a key fourth down pass falls incomplete, and the Ravens hold on for the win.
The final score is 30-27 in favor of the Ravens. Jackson finishes the game with two touchdown passes and a touchdown run, while Mayfield throws for three touchdowns but also has an interception. Edwards also has a big game for the Ravens, rushing for over 100 yards and two touchdowns.
It's a hard-fought win for the Ravens, who improve to 9-5 and stay in the playoff hunt. The Browns fall to 4-9-1 and are officially eliminated from playoff contention. It was a solid outing for both teams, with plenty of big plays and drama throughout.
