Monday Night Football Season 40 Episode 17 Minnesota Vikings at Chicago Bears
- December 28, 2009
As the 40th season of Monday Night Football continues, episode 17 presents fans with an exciting match-up between two NFC North rivals: the Minnesota Vikings and the Chicago Bears. This game promises to be a highly strategic affair as both teams vie for critical divisional wins and playoff positioning.
The Minnesota Vikings come into this game with a 6-7 record, having lost their last three games in a row. Despite their recent struggles, the Vikings boast a formidable offense led by quarterback Kirk Cousins, who has thrown for over 3,500 yards and 28 touchdowns so far this season. Cousins has been particularly effective throwing to wide receiver Adam Thielen, who has hauled in 74 catches for over 900 yards and 13 touchdowns on the year. The Vikings also boast a strong rushing attack anchored by running back Dalvin Cook, who has rushed for 1,352 yards and 14 touchdowns this season. On defense, the Vikings are led by linebacker Eric Kendricks and safety Harrison Smith, who have combined for over 160 tackles on the year.
The Chicago Bears, meanwhile, come into this game with a 7-6 record and are still very much in the playoff hunt. Led by quarterback Mitchell Trubisky, the Bears offense has been inconsistent throughout the season, but has shown flashes of explosiveness. Trubisky has thrown for over 2,500 yards and 17 touchdowns so far this season, and has developed a strong connection with veteran receiver Allen Robinson, who has racked up 80 catches for over 1,000 yards and 6 touchdowns on the year. The Bears ground game has been led by running back David Montgomery, who has rushed for 887 yards and 5 touchdowns so far this season. On defense, the Bears are one of the best units in the league, anchored by linebacker Khalil Mack and defensive end Akiem Hicks, who have combined for 12 sacks on the year.
As the game gets underway, both teams come out firing on all cylinders. Kirk Cousins wastes no time in finding Adam Thielen for an early touchdown, putting the Vikings up 7-0 early in the first quarter. However, the Bears respond quickly with a long drive capped off by a touchdown pass from Trubisky to Robinson, tying the game up at 7-7. The rest of the first half is back-and-forth as both teams struggle to gain a foothold and take control of the game. The Vikings are able to add a field goal just before halftime to take a 10-7 lead into the break.
The second half is where things really heat up. The Bears come out firing on offense, with Trubisky finding Robinson for another touchdown early in the third quarter to put the Bears up 14-10. The Vikings respond quickly, however, with a long drive capped off by a touchdown run by Dalvin Cook to retake the lead at 17-14. The Bears are able to add a field goal to tie the game up midway through the fourth quarter, but the Vikings answer right back with another touchdown run by Cook to take a 24-17 lead. With time running out, the Bears mount one last drive to try and tie the game, but come up short on a fourth-down attempt deep in Vikings territory.
As the final whistle blows, the Vikings emerge victorious with a hard-fought 24-17 win over their divisional rivals. The win puts the Vikings back in playoff contention and gives them some much-needed momentum heading into the final stretch of the season. Meanwhile, the Bears will look to regroup and continue their push for the playoffs as they prepare for their next game on Monday Night Football.
