Murphy Brown is an American television sitcom that aired on CBS from 1988 to 1998, and then again from 2018 to 2019. Created by Diane English, the show starred Candice Bergen as the title character, Murphy Brown, an investigative journalist and news anchor. The show revolves around the day-to-day life of Murphy and her co-workers at the fictional news magazine show FYI, located in Washington D.C. The ensemble cast includes Grant Shaud as Miles Silverberg, the new executive producer of FYI, and Robert Pastorelli as Eldin Bernecky, Murphy’s quirky house painter and close friend.

In the first ten seasons of the show, Murphy Brown tackles controversial and topical issues such as politics, ethics, and social justice. It has been praised as one of the most incisive and thought-provoking sitcoms of its time, with a biting wit that skewers politicians and pop culture icons alike.

The show’s titular character, Murphy Brown, is a fiercely independent and outspoken career woman who navigates the professional and personal challenges of being a working mother. Murphy’s son, Avery (played by Haley Joel Osment), is born in season four of the show, and the subsequent seasons explore the difficulties of balancing work and motherhood.

The supporting cast of FYI includes several other strong-willed and memorable characters. Miles Silverberg is the new executive producer of FYI who often clashes with Murphy over the direction of the show. Jim Dial (played by Charles Kimbrough) is a veteran newscaster who often acts as Murphy’s voice of reason. Frank Fontana (played by Joe Regalbuto) is the show’s perpetual bachelor and investigative reporter. Finally, Corky Sherwood (played by Faith Ford) is the bubbly, blonde weatherwoman who balances her on-camera smile with a healthy dose of ambition.

After the show’s initial run ended in 1998, Murphy Brown returned to CBS in 2018 for a revival season that lasted 13 episodes. The show once again tackled current events and political topics, with an added emphasis on social media and the ever-changing landscape of journalism.

Throughout its run, Murphy Brown has earned critical acclaim and a loyal fanbase for its sharp writing, memorable characters, and socially conscious storytelling. It remains one of the most influential sitcoms of its era, and a key example of network television’s ability to tackle important issues in a humorous and relatable way.

From the Emmy-winning performances of Bergen and the ensemble cast to the series’ smart and insightful take on politics and society, Murphy Brown remains a classic of American television comedy.

Murphy Brown is a series that is currently running and has 11 seasons (260 episodes). The series first aired on November 14, 1988.
