Watch My Living Doll

My Living Doll is a sci-fi television series produced by Jack Chertok, filmed at Desilu studios, and aired from September of 1964 to March of 1965. It was the first television series to feature Julie Newmar, and also starred Bob Cummings. Lastly, it is regarded as one of the original "magic sitcoms," with its premise involving an android, played by Newmar, rather than otherworldly beings such as Martians, genies, or witches.

The series is about Rhoda, also known as the Experiment AF 709 android, and her interactions with Dr. Bob McDonald (played by Bob Cummings). AF 709 was built to maintain one of NASA's space capsules but manages to leave the lab she. Bob enters the plot and premise by being enlisted to recover Rhoda. However, AF 709's designer must leave the country for Pakistan and so he entrusts Bob to care for her while he's away. Bob, a psychologist within the US Air Force, is also tasked with teaching Rhoda to become the perfect woman; a definition he declares "is a woman who doesn't talk back and does as she's told."

AF 709 is nicknamed Rhoda, after Bob's aunt, and her robotic nature is constantly being obfuscated by Bob during her interactions with Bob's family, friends, and colleagues. These matters become complicated, such as in one episode where the frequency and pacing of Lewis Carroll's, known to be a mathematician, writing causes Rhoda to suffer as if infected with a virus. Rhoda must also be regularly corrected by Bob when taking remarks and orders in the most literal meaning possible.

The series lasted one season of 26 episodes, although most of its episodes have been lost to time. The surviving episodes that can be viewed are adapted from 16mm versions after the 35mm originals were lost in a 1994 Earthquake. The final five episodes had Bob's character written out and replaced by Jack Mullaney's after Bob left the series due to low ratings. Notably, My Living Doll was picked up for airing without even being vetted with a pilot episode due to a direct order from CBS president, James Aubrey. Lastly, the series is noteworthy for coining the phrase "does not compute."
