Ep 11. We Can Be Heroes

The show Orange is the New Black season 3 episode 11 entitled We Can Be Heroes focuses on several different storylines within Litchfield Penitentiary. Piper is still trying to assert her power within the prison, but has been struggling as her business ventures have gone sour. She decides to help Alex in her attempt to track down the hitman who is after her, which leads them on a wild goose chase involving a gun and some fake IDs.

Meanwhile, Cindy is struggling with her newfound role as a "black Jewish" woman and turns to Sister Ingalls for guidance. The two women have some heart-to-heart conversations about religion and identity, and Cindy even considers converting to Judaism. But when Sister Ingalls takes things too far and starts staging a hunger strike, Cindy realizes that maybe religion shouldn't be the focus of her life after all.

Taystee, on the other hand, is still reeling from Poussey's death and is struggling to come to terms with her grief. She spends most of the episode avoiding everyone and eventually confides in Caputo about how she's feeling. Caputo is surprisingly supportive and even offers to let Taystee help plan Poussey's memorial.

Pennsatucky is dealing with her own problems, namely her newfound desire for intelligence. She starts taking classes and studying for the GED, much to the confusion of her friends. But when Boo starts mocking her for it, Pennsatucky realizes that even her best friend doesn't think she's capable of being smart.

Finally, we see a glimpse of the outside world as Aleida is released from prison. She struggles to readjust to life on the outside and ends up staying with Gloria and her family. But when she realizes that Gloria's son is dealing drugs, she starts to worry that he's going down the same path that led her to prison in the first place.

Overall, We Can Be Heroes is a poignant and emotional episode that highlights the disparate experiences of the women of Litchfield Penitentiary. From Piper's attempts to assert her power to Taystee's struggles with grief, each character is given a chance to shine and show their humanity. It's a powerful reminder that even in the darkest of places, there is still hope for redemption and change.
