In the sixth episode of the first season of "Pregnant in Heels" titled "Birth-a-phobia," Rosie Pope, a maternity concierge and fashion designer, takes on a couple who are afraid of giving birth.
The couple consists of David, a successful businessman, and Nina, a restless decorator who is hesitant about motherhood. Nina's phobia is so severe that she has avoided giving birth altogether despite being pregnant multiple times.
Rosie starts off by meeting with David and Nina to talk about their concerns and fears. She quickly discovers that Nina has been avoiding the whole idea of childbirth because of her anxiety and worry about the pain. She is unsure if she can handle the pain, and the unknown of giving birth is too much for her to handle.
Rosie also learns that David is worried about his wife's phobia and wants her to overcome the fear of childbirth. He's been supportive during the pregnancy by attending all the doctor visits and taking birthing classes, but he wants Nina to feel confident about giving birth.
Rosie arranges an appointment with a birth specialist to help Nina progress in her journey. The couple seems a bit nervous about the initial visit, but they vow to overcome their fear by facing it head-on.
During the birth specialist visit, Nina gets a better understanding of what she is going to tackle, learns about different methods of reducing pain while giving birth and the birthing process itself, and even tries a few breathing exercises and positions for birth. It is a great success as Nina feels more relaxed and confident about the delivery process.
The couple learns that there are many different ways to approach giving birth, and with proper preparation, it is an experience that they can feel confident and positive about.
After the birth specialist, Rosie brings the couple out to do some shopping for items they will need for their baby. They are excited to do so, and it is an excellent opportunity for Nina to get some retail therapy while also getting ready for the baby.
The couple also meets with a doula, who is a trained birth assistant who provides support during labor. The doula spends time with Nina and educates her about some combined positions, exercises, pain management, breathing techniques, and relaxation techniques. These are some important ways to prepare oneself for the birth process and also serves as a positive influence during the labor.
This episode ends with David and Nina returning home with all the items they bought for the new family member, prepared and excited to welcome their new baby into the world.
