Southern and Hungry Season 2 Episode 3: Chattanooga Chew

Hosts Damaris Phillips and Rutledge Wood are back in Tennessee for another food-filled adventure in this episode of Southern and Hungry. This time, they head to Chattanooga to try out some of the city's most beloved eats.

Their first stop is at The Bitter Alibi, a restaurant known for its creative takes on traditional Southern cuisine. Damaris and Rutledge are immediately charmed by the cozy atmosphere and quirky decor, but it's the food that really steals the show. They start off with a plate of crispy fried okra and move on to a massive sandwich called The Bird. This behemoth features fried chicken, bacon, pimento cheese, and other Southern staples, all piled high on a buttery roll. The hosts agree that it's one of the best sandwiches they've ever tasted.

Next, they visit a local food truck that specializes in arepas, a type of Venezuelan street food. The truck is called Chato's and is run by a friendly couple who left their native Venezuela to start a new life in Chattanooga. Damaris and Rutledge are blown away by the arepas, which are stuffed with everything from shredded beef to plantains to black beans and cheese. They also try a glass of refreshing tamarind juice, which is a popular beverage in Latin America.

The hosts then head over to Main Street Meats, a popular butcher shop and restaurant in the heart of downtown Chattanooga. Here, they meet with owner Erik Niel and try some of his famous house-made sausages. They sample everything from pork andouille to lamb merguez to chorizo verde, all of which are bursting with flavor. Erik also teaches Damaris and Rutledge how to make his signature meatloaf, which is made with a blend of ground beef, pork, and veal and is served with creamy mashed potatoes and green beans.

After that hearty meal, Damaris and Rutledge need something sweet to balance it out. They visit Clumpies Ice Cream Co., a local favorite that has been serving up handmade ice cream since 1999. The hosts are impressed by the wide range of flavors, which include everything from classic chocolate and vanilla to more creative options like lavender honey and peach cobbler. They end up getting a scoop of chocolate peanut butter and a scoop of buttermilk honey, both of which they describe as being incredibly rich and creamy.

The final stop of the day is at Mayan Kitchen, a restaurant that serves up authentic Mexican cuisine with a Mayan twist. Damaris and Rutledge meet with chef Jose Enriquez and try some of his most popular dishes, including a spicy arrachera steak and a unique take on fish tacos. Instead of the typical battered and fried fish, these tacos feature grilled mahi mahi topped with a flavorful slaw and a tangy salsa. The hosts are blown away by the complexity of the flavors and the impressive presentation.

Throughout the episode, Damaris and Rutledge are impressed not only by the food but also by the people behind it. They meet with chefs, food truck owners, and restaurateurs who are all passionate about sharing their love of Southern and Latin American cuisine with the world. And as they explore the charming city of Chattanooga, they can't help but feel grateful for the opportunity to indulge in such a delicious adventure.
