Luckily, she manages to fend off the robbers and escape with the help of the man who had been traveling with her. As they flee, they come across a temple where they decide to rest for the night.
The temple's overseer, a wise old man named Rakushun, takes Yoko under his wing and teaches her more about the customs and history of the Twelve Kingdoms. Rakushun is a talking rat, but his intelligence and kindness make him an invaluable ally to Yoko. He reveals that the robbers who tried to attack her are part of a larger organization known as the Blue Scarves. They are a group of bandits who are notorious for kidnapping young girls and selling them into slavery.
Meanwhile, Yoko's absence has caused concern among the people of Kei. However, Yoko's friend and former classmate, Sugimoto, decides to take matters into her own hands and sets out to find Yoko herself.
As Yoko and Rakushun continue on their journey to Kei, they stumble upon a hidden village that is home to a tribe known as the Kirin. The Kirin are a rare and powerful species that are said to be blessed by the gods. They choose the rulers of the Twelve Kingdoms and are an essential part of the kingdom's political structure.
