Adolf Hitler and the German forces staff and fictitious general von Roon were major characters. Also included were documentary footage segments that were narrated by William Woodson to explain important characters and major events.

During the chaos of the war, Commander Victor (Pug) Henry (played by Robert Mitchum) finds himself in the midst of it with his entire family. Pug advances to become President Roosevelt's naval attache in Germany, winding up in a conference with the notoriously dangerous Adolf Hitler.

Pug also embarks upon a journey to England at the height of all that is happening. He falls for an Englishwoman called Pamala Tudsbury (played by Victoria Tennant). As a result, Rhoda, his wife (played by Polly Bergen) throws herself into a torrid affair with Palmer Kirby (played by Peter Graves) who is a prominent nuclear physicist.

At the same time, Pug's son Warren (played by Ben Murphy) works as a Pacific naval pilot and Byron, his younger son (played by Jan-Michael Vincent) has been deployed to Europe. He has fallen in love with the very free minded Natalie (played by Ali MacGraw) who is the niece of an acclaimed Jewish author named Aaron Jastrow (played by John Houseman).

As time goes on, Pug finds that he is becoming further embroiled in the growing chaos of the war as he goes to Russia and must confront even more war horrors at the battle front.
