We Are Who We Are is an HBO limited series that premiered in September 2020. The show is created and directed by Luca Guadagnino, known for his work on the Academy Award-winning film, Call Me By Your Name. The series is set on an American military base in Italy and follows the lives of two teenagers, Fraser Wilson (Jack Dylan Grazer) and Caitlin Harper (Jordan Kristine Seamón), as they navigate their coming of age and identity in a world that is constantly changing.

The show opens with Fraser, a 14-year-old boy, arriving at the military base with his mothers, Sarah (Chloë Sevigny) and Maggie (Alice Braga), who are in charge of the military's cultural activity program. Fraser is immediately shown to be a somewhat eccentric character, with his unique sense of style and a love for classical music. Caitlin, the other protagonist, is a 14-year-old girl who has lived on the base her whole life with her fathers, Richard (Kid Cudi) and Jenny (Faith Alabi), who are both army personnel. Caitlin is more reserved than Fraser and is struggling with her identity and trying to fit in with her peers.

Throughout the series, we see the two teenagers form a close bond that goes beyond traditional friendship boundaries. Their relationship is constantly evolving and is a significant theme throughout the series. As they explore their sexuality and navigate their way through the ever-changing social dynamics on the base, Fraser and Caitlin challenge each other and those around them in ways that leave a lasting impact.

One of the most striking aspects of We Are Who We Are is its cinematography and soundtrack. The series is set in a beautiful coastal town in Italy, and the visuals are stunning. The camera work is often handheld, placing the viewer in the middle of the action, creating a sense of intimacy with the characters. The soundtrack, which includes a mix of pop songs, classical music, and ambient noise, adds depth to the show, creating a sense of tension and emotion that drives the narrative forward.

In addition to Fraser and Caitlin, the show features a diverse cast of characters, all of whom are dealing with their own issues and struggles. There is Danny (Spence Moore II), a confident and charismatic soldier who befriends Fraser, and Craig (Corey Knight), Caitlin's older brother, who is struggling with PTSD and trying to figure out what his next steps are after leaving the military.

We Are Who We Are tackles themes of identity, sexuality, race, and mental health in a refreshing and honest way. The show is unafraid to explore complex topics and challenge societal norms. The characters are flawed and three-dimensional, making it easy for viewers to connect with them and relate to their struggles.

Overall, We Are Who We Are is a beautifully crafted series that is both thought-provoking and emotionally impactful. Through its stunning visuals, engaging storylines, and incredible performances, the show creates a world that is both captivating and immersive. It is a must-watch for anyone who enjoys coming of age stories or is looking for a show that tackles complex themes in a fresh and honest way.

We Are Who We Are is a series that is currently running and has 1 seasons (8 episodes). The series first aired on September 15, 2020.
