Could David Fincher Direct Angelina Jolie in 'Cleopatra'?

While the actual winner of the Best Director Oscar this year, Tom Hooper, can't seem to get his next project off the ground, the other contenders just keep plugging away.

David Fincher, especially, shows no signs of slowing down. He has "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" out later this year, and is expected to return for its sequels.

Now Deadline is reporting that producer Scott Rudin, who was the one who came up with the idea of Fincher directing "The Social Network" and is now producing "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo," wants Fincher for the long-gestating film, set to star Angelina Jolie.

Rudin, in describing what makes this version unique, says that it will be the first take on the story from a woman's perspective, highlighting Cleopatra's skill in politics and war strategy alongside her sexual charisma.

"Cleopatra" is an interesting project in its sense of inevitability. Angelina Jolie is, without a doubt, the only major actress who can pull of the role as Rudin describes it, and there seems to be a sense of hurry in getting the project to screen before Jolie loses her appeal with audiences.

Typically only superhero films and other tentpole releases stick around this long, looking for someone to make them, rather than calling it a day.

Last year, it was believed James Cameron would take the job and shoot it in 3D, but he moved on to continue his "Avatar" franchise. There was talk that Paul Greengrass would tackle it, which seems like an odd choice to begin with, but he is gearing up to shoot a film about the assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr. A few years ago, Steven Soderbergh wanted to do "Cleopatra" as a 3D musical.

"Cleopatra" will get made, in one form or another. Deadline believes Fincher will end up taking the job - it does seem like his best prospect - but we'll just have to see how it shakes out.
