From director Vladimir Motyl comes the 1978 Soviet film A Captain at Fifteen, based on the novel by Soviet writer Veniamin Kaverin. This coming-of-age tale follows the journey of a teenage boy named Sasha, who becomes a captain of his own steamship in the early 20th century. Set against the backdrop of the Russian Civil War, the film tells the story of Sasha (played by Vsevolod Larionov), a bright and confident young boy who dreams of becoming a sailor like his father. However, when his father is killed in battle, Sasha is forced to leave school and take up odd jobs to support his family.
But Sasha's true passion lies in the sea, and he soon finds himself drawn to a steamship that is docked near his hometown. Despite his lack of experience, Sasha convinces the ship's captain (played by Alexander Khvyilya) to take him on as a cabin boy.
As the ship sets sail, Sasha quickly proves himself to be a valuable member of the crew, and he is soon promoted to the rank of captain. Along the way, he must navigate treacherous waters, outwit dangerous pirates, and prove his worth to the skeptical crew members who question his abilities.
Through it all, Sasha remains determined to succeed, driven by his love of the sea and a desire to prove himself in the face of adversity. As he grows from a reckless teenager into a seasoned captain, Sasha learns the many perils and responsibilities that come with commanding a ship, and he begins to understand the true meaning of courage, loyalty, and sacrifice.
A Captain at Fifteen is a timeless tale of heroism and adventure, brought to life by the stunning visuals of director Vladimir Motyl and the powerful performances of Vsevolod Larionov and Alexander Khvyilya. It is a nostalgic look back at a bygone era, a tribute to the sailors and seafarers who risked their lives to explore the vast unknown, and a testament to the remarkable spirit of determination and courage that can be found in us all.
