Ford kept the nation intact but lost his election bid to Carter, who started out hoping for national renewal through government reform. But growing problems in the Middle East weakened his tenure. Reagan rode in with a tough image and despite a recession and the Iran Contra scandal, he reduced domestic spending and increased the military's. While his policies greatly enlarged the budget deficit, he restored some presidential prestige.
