The Egyptian pharaohs tried to create immortality for their god-king legacies with mummification and huge tombs, but grave robbers and time destroyed most of them. Still, many images and mummies remain, but one pharaoh's legacy, Akhenaton's, was deliberately obliterated by polytheistic priests because his monotheism threatened their power. Only in the 20th century did knowledge of Akhenaton, worshipper of the sun god, come to light.
