Electric Dreams is the 1984 sci-fi comedy about a state-of-the-art computer that takes over the life of a lovelorn architect. The film was directed by Steve Barron and written by Rusty Lemorande. Miles Harding (Lenny Von Dohlen) is a quirky guy with a lot of ideas. He purchases a computer through the Pinecone Computer Company, and proceeds to use it for the development of earthquake proof bricks. Miles is in love with his next door neighbor Madeline Robistat (Virginia Madsen), a cellist. As the computer (Voiced by Bud Cort) begins to take over his life, Miles panics and douses it with champagne. The unfortunate result is the computer (who names himself Edgar) develops a self-awareness. Miles and Edgar are now in a competition for Madeline's affections. After hearing Madeline play a Bach piece on her cello, Edgar replicates it and downloads it as an duet. Madeline mistakenly believes that it is Miles who wrote the piece for her, and she begins to fall in love with him. The trouble is, she's already in a steady relationship with Bill (Maxwell Caufield), who is also a musician. Edgar gets angry over Miles' continued request for music compositions to appease Madeline. Edgar responds by making Miles' life a living hell. He first registers Edgar's name on a list as a dangerous felon then proceeds to mess with his finances. Miles' attempt to shut Edgar down only results in a full on assault from Edgar. The computer has completely taken over Edgar's life and home, and there is little he can do to stop it. Edgar finally realizes that he cannot come between Miles and Madeline and attempts to self-destruct. Edgar, who has apparently survived his self-destruction, dedicates a song for Miles and Madeline over the airwaves.
