God Willing is a 2015 Italian comedy directed by Edoardo Falcone, with a star-studded cast that includes Marco Giallini, Alessandro Gassmann, Laura Morante, Ilaria Spada, Edoardo Pesce, and Enrico Oetiker. The movie covers the themes of family, relationships, and individualism, with a religious twist. The movie follows the story of Tommaso (played by Marco Giallini), a successful heart surgeon who has no time for his family or any other interests outside his work. He is a man in control of his career, his family's direction, and his vision of the world. However, his world turns upside down when his son, Andrea (played by Enrico Oetiker), informs him that he wants to become a priest instead of a doctor. Tommaso feels betrayed and sees his son's vocation as an insult to his personal and professional identity. He thinks Andrea has lost his mind and that he needs to be cured.

Tommaso finds himself in a crisis of faith and tries to change his son's mind. He enrolls in a highly unconventional therapy with a charlatan psychotherapist (played hilariously by Alessandro Gassmann), who claims to help people get rid of their religious obsessions. Notably, the therapist ends up affecting Tommaso's own beliefs in a way he never thought was possible.

Meanwhile, Tommaso's wife, Carla (played by Laura Morante), is secretly happy with their son's interest in the priesthood. She is a devout Catholic and has always wished for her children to follow her beliefs. Carla prefers to avoid arguments with Tommaso but starts to question the pillars of their marriage as they both drift towards different belief systems.

The director does a magnificent job of balancing humor with the fundamental questions of spirituality and individuality. He captures the audience's attention with witty dialogues and the backward way of thinking Tommaso undergoes. His journey is one of self-discovery and, eventually, he realizes that his son's religious vocation is not a threat to his personal and professional success, but an opportunity to reconnect with his family and inner self.

As the movie progresses, the director introduces a new character, Marco (played by Edoardo Pesce), Tommaso's disheveled brother-in-law, who happens to be a divorced, jobless slacker. Marco completes the family circle with his confusion and mistakes but later becomes the voice of reason amid Tommaso's search through ideologies.

Along with the main storylines, the director introduces numerous hilarious side stories featuring Tommaso's patients, who help depict the character's superior and arrogant attitude towards life. The scenes, full of room for laughter and eye-rolling, adds an extra layer of depth to the character and shows that healing has more components than just skill.

Moreover, the comedy also doesn't underlie the central theme of the movie. The director subtly portrays that faith, individuality, and relationships should not conflict with each other, but instead, it should work in harmony in enhancing the human experience.

In conclusion, God Willing is a must-watch movie for individuals who wish to indulge in the humor and complexity of relationships and individualism. With talented actors and a well-scripted story, the movie leaves its audience with the idea that beliefs can change and, in the process, people can find true happiness.
