Home for the Holidays is a 1995 American comedy-drama film directed by Jodie Foster and written by W. D. Richter. The movie tells the story of Claudia Larson, a single mother and former art restorer, who travels back to her childhood home in Baltimore for Thanksgiving dinner with her dysfunctional family. As soon as Claudia arrives, she is welcomed by her eccentric family, which includes her parents, her brother, her aunt, her niece, and her grandmother. However, Claudia soon realizes that the holidays won't be as calm as she expected. Her parents, Adele and Henry, love each other but quarrel constantly, and her brother Tommy is still living at home and having problems with his girlfriend. Claudia's aunt, Glady Jo, is a bohemian artist who always speaks her mind, and her niece, Kitt, is a rebellious teenager who isn't interested in spending time with her family.

As Claudia tries to reconnect with her family and forget about her problems, she faces several mishaps and misunderstandings. She has a complicated relationship with her mother, who constantly criticizes her choices and her parenting skills. She also meets Leo Fish, a family friend who used to have a crush on her, but has now become a handsome and successful business owner. They spend a night together and Claudia thinks that they might have a future, but Leo tells her that he has to leave for New York the next morning.

On Thanksgiving Day, Claudia's family gathers for dinner, and chaos ensues. Adele and Henry argue about the proper way to cook the turkey, and Tommy announces that he and his girlfriend are getting married in Las Vegas. Claudia tries to stay calm and enjoy the meal, but eventually breaks down and tells her family the truth about her life. She explains that she lost her job, that her daughter is drifting away from her, and that she doesn't have any romantic prospects. However, her family listens to her and offers their support, showing Claudia that she is loved and respected.

After dinner, Claudia decides to leave Baltimore and go back home. She says goodbye to Leo, who tells her that he will miss her, and takes the train back to Chicago. As she sits on the train, Claudia reflects on her family, her life, and her future. She realizes that she has a lot to be thankful for, and that she doesn't have to be perfect to be happy. She also understands that her family is flawed, but that they have a bond that will always keep them together.

Home for the Holidays is a heartwarming and funny movie that captures the spirit of Thanksgiving and family dynamics. Jodie Foster's direction is sensitive and insightful, and the cast, which includes Holly Hunter, Anne Bancroft, Robert Downey Jr., and Dylan McDermott, delivers outstanding performances. The film explores themes of love, loss, and forgiveness, and shows how even the most dysfunctional family can find joy and support in each other.
