Originally imagined as part of a trilogy of unflinching, searing thrillers, Malevolence combines elements of police procedural, true crime stories, and straight up horror to weave together several edge-of-your-seat stories. Using plot elements similar to John Carpenter's classic Halloween, director Stephan Mena takes the viewer on a slick, gorey ride through familiar elements of horror: a creepy run-down house, creepier neighbors, hints at an original story of an even scarier killer, and interweaving stories of evil and plain old bad luck. Mena doesn't let up with scare after scare, while still relentlessly asking the question "Where does evil come from? Where do we learn evil?" From the opening scene - warning, it's bloody - to the choices a mother makes to save her daughter from a killer, Malevolence remains smart, tight and full of screams.
