Faith-based reform movements have a long history in America, some focusing on the individual and some on broader social issues. Government-funded religious reform programs, such as those in prisons, are justified by supporters because of their effectiveness. Detractors worry that they may be disguised forms of sectarian indoctrination, in violation of the Establishment Clause of the Constitution. Other movements, such as the anti-alcohol WCTU or AA, arose spontaneously through individuals, but often have had considerable social and political power.
