As a struggling comedian in Chicago, Jack (played by Jack Thurston Farrell) is going through the motions of life, bouncing between open mic nights and part-time jobs. His days are spent working at a call center, where he dials number after number, trying to talk customers into buying things they don't really need. But for Jack, the real excitement happens at night, when he gets up on stage and tries to make strangers laugh.
However, his routine is about to be shaken up when he meets a young woman named Dionna (played by Dionna Griffin-Irons) at one of his shows. As the two start to spend time together, Jack begins to realize that there's more to life than just chasing after his dream of being a comedian. But with each step he takes towards a new life, he's also forced to confront the demons of his past and the hard realities of the present.
At the same time, Susan Messing plays the role of Katie, Jack's boss at the call center who is more concerned with profits than the well-being of her employees. With a crude sense of humor and a harsh management style, Katie is the embodiment of everything that Jack hates about his job.
Throughout the movie, we see Jack struggle to find his place in the world, caught between his desire to make people laugh and his need to make a living. As he tries to navigate the complex relationships in his life, he's forced to confront his own fears, doubts, and insecurities. Meanwhile, Dionna provides a glimmer of hope in his life, offering him a chance at something more.
Something Out of Nothing is a heartfelt and honest portrayal of the struggles of young adulthood, exploring themes of identity, belonging, and the pursuit of happiness. Through Jack's journey, we see the highs and lows of chasing a dream, and the importance of finding meaning in life beyond just achieving success. The performances of the actors are both moving and relatable, making this an emotional and engaging film that will leave a lasting impact on viewers.
