The Best Bet is a 2004 film set in Singapore and directed by Jack Neo. The movie revolves around the theme of gambling and is a light-hearted comedy-drama that focuses on the different forms of gambling and the people who get involved in them. The film follows the story of Ah Hock (Richard Low), a middle-aged man who is addicted to gambling and is deep in debt. Ah Hock finds himself in a desperate situation when he borrows money from a loan shark to fund his gambling habit. He soon realizes that he is in over his head and must find a way to repay the loan shark before it’s too late.

Ah Hock’s son, Ah Boy (Mark Lee), tries to help him and urges him to stop gambling. Ah Boy is a kind-hearted and determined character who works as a car park attendant during the day and attends university at night. Christopher Ming-Shun Lee plays the role of Ah Hock’s friend, Ah Kun, who is a compulsive gambler like Ah Hock. Ah Kun is a divorced man with a young son who he is struggling to support. The two friends spend most of their time together, gambling at different venues, including a mahjong parlor, soccer betting, and horse racing. Their actions show the different risks and ways people gamble, but also how gambling addiction can negatively impact an individual's life.

As the film progresses, Ah Hock and Ah Boy’s relationship becomes strained as Ah Boy becomes more frustrated with his father’s gambling habits. However, as Ah Hock’s debt to the loan shark continues to grow, they are both forced to work together to find a way to repay the debt and get Ah Hock's life back on track.
