In the romantic comedy The Kissing Booth, a teenager named Elle signs up to work in a fundraising kissing booth. The job leads to a forbidden romance with the hottest boy in high school. She also risks her relationship with her best friend. The film is based on a young-adult novel. It debuted on Netflix in 2018. The story follows teenagers Elle and Lee. The pair have been best friends since they were little, but now they're in high school and working their way through adolescence. Elle has a crush on Lee's older brother, Noah. Noah is a bad boy who doesn't treat Elle very well, but she likes him anyway. When she manages to develop a relationship with Noah, Lee isn't at all happy. Can the two of them work out the complexities of their relationship before it's too late? The Kissing Booth is based on a young-adult novel written by Beth Reekles. Netflix claims the film was well-received by viewers. It was also nominated with a Kids' Choice Award in 2019. However, critics gave the movie predominantly negative reviews, calling it cliched, predictable, and sexist. Despite the poor reviews, Netflix produced a sequel with the unsurprising title The Kissing Booth 2. A second sequel, called The Kissing Booth 3, is in production and was scheduled to be released in 2021. The second sequel was filmed in conjunction with the first, reducing the chance of pandemic-related delays pushing back the release date.
